As one approaches High Point Adolescent School, singing, guitars, keyboards and drums can be heard emanating from the top of the hill. All these lovely sounds are due to the High Point Adolescent School music program which has been on a march towards expansion and distinction.
Our music program is provided through classroom instruction, and individual and small groups which develop talent in vocal and instrumental music. The classroom programs expand the students’ horizons with exposure to music from different genres and historical periods. Students are also encouraged to participate by performing vocally and with various rhythm instruments along with the music which is presented in both auditory and visual formats.
Examples of the classroom and small group music program are:
1. Singing melodies and songs
2. Learning to play different musical instruments
3. Developing performance skills in various genres.
4. Learning about music history
5. Learning to read music
6. Identifying and comparing various styles of music and composers
7. Developing skill at critiquing a piece of music
8. Explaining how culture influences the development and understanding of music
9. Understanding how technology has influenced the world of music
10. Exploring different musical careers
Individual or small group musical instruction is given in guitar, piano, drums, cello, and keyboards. In these classes, students learn the structure of the instrument, how to read music, play individually as well as play together. Communication and listening skills are emphasized in these classes. It is the eventual goal of the program to have a school band, which would give recitals in school.
The High Point Adolescent School chorus is composed of students from 7th to 12th grades. The study of appropriate singing styles and repertoire development are the focus of this group. The chorus gives performances at the talent show, graduation, and for various holidays. The chorus experience teaches students how to sing a piece of music with purpose and uniformity, while developing rapport with the audience.
The music program at High Point Adolescent School encourages students to develop self-discipline, diligence, and aesthetic sensitivity and expand their imagination and intellect. It allows students to explore new worlds, express themselves in a positive manner, expand creativity, and to view life from another perspective.
