High Point Schools Services

THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

While other schools may offer comprehensive educational programming, what makes High Point stand out among our peers is our extensive clinical program. Our clinical program focuses on the emotional, social and developmental needs of the student population and their families. Our goal is to provide comprehensive services designed to meet the challenge of each student’s unique abilities and needs.

At High Point, we are proud of the fact that we have child psychiatrists on staff, as well as licensed clinical social workers. From individual therapy to group and family therapy, we strive to connect to our students and meet their developmental, social and emotional needs. Additional services include substance abuse evaluation/treatment, sexual abuse consultation/evaluation, onsite emergency clinical/crisis services and more.

High Point Schools also provide speech, language and hearing services to help bring about optimal communication skills in all students. For those students requiring this therapy, services are provided both individually and in small conversation groups.

SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND HEARING SERVICES

The goal of the Speech and Language Program is to facilitate optimal communication skills for all High Point students. Students’ speech, language and hearing abilities are formally screened upon admission to the program. Students are then assessed at the beginning of each school year. Results of these screenings, observations across programs, and team consultations are utilized to determine the need for, frequency and type of therapy. Conferences with parents/guardians also play an important part in developing students’ goals.

Therapy is conducted both individually and in small conversation groups. Speech and language services are also provided in classroom groups and in cross-disciplinary collaborative projects. Several classrooms are equipped with FM Systems which amplify the teacher's voice throughout the room, providing a clear and consistent speech signal. The Speech and Language Clinicians consult with classroom teachers regarding the use of these classroom FM systems, personal FM systems and hearing aid use/care.

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT

Pro-social behavior is taught through a variety of methods, including role modeling, peer group support, time out, and individual and group problem solving discussions. Privileges and independence are earned when a student demonstrates greater responsibility through structured classroom behavior management systems.
